imani k asked:

I’m 14 years old going on 15 and almost every morning before school i go by this gas station to get gum or a drink or something and one day i went in and i didn’t have but ten bucks and i had a gym bag for P.E so i thought maybe just maybe i could get away with taking a few packs of gum.But i got carried away and got like 4 packs of gum 2 packs of mints and a candy bar.So to make in seem like i didn’t do anything i bought a sweet tea,but when i got to the register the guy told me to open my bag i pulled out the candy bar.He said what else and i kept pulling things out.My next door neighbor is always at this gas station playing keno.So the guy told me to give him my number so i wrote down a fake number. He told me if the number was fake he would tell my neighbor.I ran out super fast.I was feeling so guilty. I was about to go home and tell my mother i was sick but i toughed it out and walked back to school.Well the guilt came back and i knew i couldn’t stay at school.Cause what if my neighbor came by my house and told my mother. So i went to the clinic and went home quickly!!!!!!!!!!!! Now i want to know whats going to happened to me?

He’s going to tell your mother- if he was going to press charges he wouldn’t have let you leave.
I hope you have learned your lesson-

Your mother will be very disappointed

You will probably have to go to court, and if you are lucky they will only send you to a juvenile detention center.

First of all, because you are a juvenile, the law for you is probably different than for adults. Second, the answer will depend on what state law governs. I would need to know what state the gas station was in.

The best thing would be to go back to the store. Pay for the gum. Apologize and promise to not go in the store again.

If you were an adult, it would probably be a criminal offense known as petty theft. The most you would get for a first time a offense is a fine and a misdemeanor on your record.

trial followed by immediate suspension of chocolate rations…

excuse me, trial followed by immediate execution by firing squad…

ah, the good old days

I can’t tell you what will happen, nobody on here can, but since you’re 14 going on 15 you’re almost a man, you need to start acting like one…return the merchandise or pay for it….you need to sincerely apologize to the shop owner and assure him it won’t happen again. People respect others that can admit their own faults, and can man up to do the right thing.

Hopefully, your mother is told, either by you or your neighbor, This is one of those life lessons that you should pay close attention to. Nothing comes easy, you have to earn it. Make sure you apologize to the clerk and let him know you will not do it again, or else things will be awkward with you and him for a long time.

I had the same thing happen when I was 10. My brother and I were in a neighborhood sporting goods store and my brother took a fishing lure. The owner, who knew our whole family, took it back and said he would be speaking with our mother. It freaked us both out and we never set foot in his store again which was two blocks from our house and for years we would run everytime we saw his jeep coming down the street. He was a pretty wise old guy – he knew that was all he needed to do to scare us. Neither my brother or I ever shoplifted again.

This man might be doing the same but one way or the other you should learn a lesson from this and consider how lucky you are if you get away with it.
