I’m A Gamboholic. What Should I Do?

Chris C asked:

I’m 21 yr old male… I’m addicted to online poker, poker at the casino. and sometimes video slot machines and dog tracks. When i go out to eat at the diner i can’t resist not to play keno. I do not do scratch tickets anymore. I rather gamble my money away then buy a new pair of jeans. Which comes to think about it I only have one good pair. I lost 7 grand in football bettin 2 years ago… this year well i’ll proably be back at it again… I tryed GA (gamblers anoynmous) but it was a big joke. I have a bad habit and I’m trying to quit. Maybe i’m young and will realize my problem?

you should try going to a therapist, and when u said GA was a joke, you should reconsider if you followed the 12 steps to the best of your abilitly and found a sponsor who was dedicated. there are gambling hotlines you can call when you feel the urge. 1-800 gambler is one

Well, sounds like you live in an area that has very accessible gambling. One option might be to move to an area were the temptation would be less strong to gamble on a daily basis. Another would be to discard any excess credit cards, etc. that you use to gamble. Also, if your parents are in any way supporting you financially (or other family) make them aware of the problem. Stop fueling the addiction any way possible!

You have realized your problem if you’re asking questions about it on Yahoo Answers. Just stop – willpower is everything. It really is that simple.

Delete your online poker program – it’s all a big scam and you’re only fueling it by playing.

Plan your day around avoiding the casino – give yourself other alternative activities to keep your mind off of it.

Tell your friends and family and anyone who expects you to accompany them gambling that you are no longer able to. Explain your problem and ask for support.

Don’t replace the addiction with some other negative activity.

Start keeping a journal to work through your temptations and keep it on you at all times.

Get a qualified, personal counselor – if you’re a university student, they often have free clinics.

Keep gambling how it is, entertainment. It is willing to control your life and there are plenty of people out there willing to let you give them your money. After all the odds are in there favour. I was a gambler myself and spent plenty of money at the casinos. Then one day I said instead of taking $1000.00 to Nevada I went and bought a new laptop. So now instead of giving money away, I buy myself something. I’m using the laptop now. Why don’t you get some friends together for a poker tournament with a 20 dollar buy in, drink some beers and save alto of money.

do a google search of homeless people and look at there pictures. Then understand that this will be you if you continue to gamble. Call 1 800 555 1212 and ask for the number to gamblers anonymous. They helped me, they can help you.

Realize that this lifestyle may eventually rob you blind. You are out of control if you can’t simply resist. Most people would eat at the diner and not even notice a machine there. For the gambler, it’s as if you’re a fish and the machine is the lure. It’s irresistable. Try Gamblers Anonumous, try not carrying any cash around. Try not doiing any online gambling or any gambling for limited periods of time first. You then will realize that there are so many other things to do that are fulfilling and fun.
